A member suggested that in analogy to the World of Chemistry series, it would be more appropriate if the course were at the 100-level. It was pointed out that there would necessarily be some small overlap between PHYS 202 and some other courses. Prof. Cline moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. New Course: PHYS 478 Short Research Project AC-04-44 1 credit 306.2 Add Restriction: "Open only to U3 students" Prof. Cline moved, seconded by Prof. Shultz, that the course be adopted. Program Changes: Joint Honours in Physics & Chemistry AC-04-45 306.3 Dean Shaver said that since there would be a Faculty-wide review of programs, he would like to propose a moratorium on program changes that result in a change in credit weight. The moratorium would take effect as of the next Academic Committee meeting. Prof. Cline moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. (7) B.A. & Sc. New Course: COGS 401 Research Cognitive Science 1 AC-04-46 6 credits New Course: COGS 402 Research Cognitive Science 2 AC-04-47 6 credits Associate Dean Mendelson moved, seconded by Prof. Fabry, that the above courses be adopted. The motion carried. Program Changes: - Faculty Program in Cognitive Science AC-04-48 307.1 It was pointed out that SCTP would require a side-by-side comparison of the proposed and existing program. Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Associate Dean Mendelson, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. (8) PSYCHOLOGY New Course: PSYC 329 Intro. to Auditory Cognition AC-04-49 3 credits 308.1 Concerns raised were that there was no final examination, and that, although the course has three main units, the method of evaluation states that there would be "2 in-class exams that each cover one unit of the course..." Also, PSYC 100 was listed as a prerequisite in the course outline, but not on the Course Proposal Form. Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Associate Dean Mendelson, that the course be adopted pending resolution of the above issues. The motion carried. New Course: PSYC 537 Adv Seminar in Psych of Lang AC-04-50 3 credits Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Prof. Yau, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. - Calendar Entry – 3.6.2 Project Courses AC-04-51 Secretary's Note: Calendar Entry to be considered at the next Academic Committee meeting. The motion carried. PSYC 380 Honours Research Project and Seminar AC-04-59 Changes in title & credit weight (from 6 to 9) Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Associate Dean Mendelson, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. B.Sc. Program Changes: Faculty in Psychology AC-04-60 308.2 Associate Dean Mendelson said that the Faculty Program in Psychology was a holdover from the corresponding Arts program, and did not require students to take a statistics course. All Science students have the necessary background to do the statistics course required for the Major Program in Psychology, and it was thus debatable as to whether the Faculty Program was appropriate for the B.Sc. degree. Associate Dean Mendelson suggested that the Department of Psychology reconsider the Faculty Program. Prof. Leighton moved, seconded by Prof. Yau, that the above changes to the Faculty Program be tabled to a future Academic Committee meeting. The motion carried. Major in Psychology AC-04-61 Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Prof. Arkani-Hamed, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. Honours in Psychology AC-04-62 Prof. Shultz moved, seconded by Prof. Cline, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. 308.3 Dean Shaver mentioned that a number of programs in the Faculty had a high credit weight. He said that it was easily possible for credit weights to escalate, and that the upcoming program review would examine the issue. Hence the moratorium on credit-weight changes for programs. The moratorium would take effect at the next Academic Committee meeting. (9) COMPUTER SCIENCE/MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS New Course: COMP 552/MATH 552 Combinatorial Optimization AC-04-63/AC-04-64 4 credits Prof. Schmidt moved, seconded by Prof. Kemme, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. (11) COMPUTER SCIENCE New Course: COMP 649 Quantum Cryptography AC-04-69 4 credits 311.1 Add Prerequisite: "and permission of instructor" 311.2 It was mentioned that the word "Quantum" was used many times in the course description. Prof. Kemme said she would look into this. Prof. Kemme moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. B.Sc. Program Changes: - Honours in Computer Science AC-04-70 311.3 It was pointed out that there was no side-by-side comparison in the Program Revision Form. Prof. Kemme moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. B.Sc. Program Changes: - Major in Software Engineering AC-04-71 Prof. Kemme moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. (12) ACADEMIC PROGRAM REVIEW PROCESS AC-04-35 - Detailed Procedural Guidelines AC-04-36 312.1 Associate Dean Mendelson said that the membership of the Faculty Review Group was: Associate Dean Mendelson (Chair) D.
