(1) MINUTES OF OCTOBER 21, 1997 AC-97-25 Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Franklin, that the minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES Minute 202.2 to 202.6, Science Minors Within the BSc 302.1 A motion to institute 18-credit Science Minors for Science students (with no overlap) remained on the table from the previous Academic Committee Meeting (October 21, 1997). 302.2 The following amendment was proposed by Prof. Drury, and seconded by Prof. Straub: That where there is an existing allowance for more than a six-credit overlap in a 24-credit Minor, that allowance in an 18-credit Minor should be reduced by six credits. This amendment was not voted on. 302.3 During discussion of the issue of 18-credit Minors, the issue of multidisciplinary Minors caused some concern among members. 302.4 Associate Dean de Takacsy pointed out that due to time constraints, 18-credit Science Minors for Science students could not be instituted in the 1998-99 academic year. 302.5 The motion and the amendment on 18-credit Minors were re-tabled until the next Academic Committee Meeting on December 9, 1997. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-97-31 (for information) Prof. Panangaden introduced BSc Internship Programs for the School of Computer Science, and for the Departments of Physics, and Mathematics & Statistics, and answered members' questions. The motion carried. (7) PSYCHOLOGY New Course: 204-531 Structural Equation Models AC-97-29 3 credits Prof. Franklin introduced the new Psychology course, 204-531. Prof. Franklin moved, seconded by Mr. Aggarwal, that the above course be adopted. The motion carried. New Course: 204-533 International Health Psychology AC-97-30 3 credits (Correspondence-Tabled) 307.1 Prof. Franklin said that other departments at McGill had been consulted, and that there was no similar course at McGill. Prof. Franklin moved, seconded by Mr. Kogan-Bales, that the above course be adopted. 307.2 After some discussion concerning the wording of the course description, it was suggested that the course be approved, subject to revisions to the course description. 307.3 An amendment was proposed, as follows: '151-227 or permission of instructor' should be added to Document AC-97-29, under Item # 11, Prerequisites. The amended motion carried. (8) BIOLOGY 177-358B Canadian Flora AC-97-36 Changes: Course Description & Prerequisite Prof. Pasztor explained the reasons for the changes. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Mr. Aggarwal, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. 177-365A Conservation Biology AC-97-37 Change in course number from 177-455 308.1 Prof. Pasztor said that with the introduction of the McGill School of Environment, ecology courses were being revised. She gave the history of the ecology courses and the reasons why 177-308, the prerequisite course to 177-365A, was being offered in the 'B' term. She said that many students currently take 177-308B in the first year, and that for the 1998-99 academic year, students would be advised to take 177-308B in U1 year, and defer another required course in U1. She emphasized the importance of taking the series of Ecology courses in a logical manner. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Prof. GrÅtter, that the above changes be approved. The motion carried. New Course 177-535B Political Ecology AC-97-35 3 credits (Correspondence-Tabled) 308.2 Prof. Pasztor introduced the proposed new Biology course, 177-535B, and answered members' questions. 308.3 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that there was very strong support for this course from a number of professors (document #AC-97-35, Correspondence-Tabled) that he had consulted with, and that consultation reports would be forthcoming. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Prof. Brawer, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. (11) INSTITUTE OF PARASITOLOGY (FAES) - Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology AC-97-32,33,34 (Correspondence-Tabled) 311.1 Consideration of this item was postponed until the next Academic Committee meeting, when Prof. M. Scott (FAES) would be invited to answer questions. (12) OTHER BUSINESS - Minor Concentration in Science for Arts AC-97-69 (Tabled) 312.1 After some discussion concerning the modified Minor Concentration in Science for Arts students, Mr. Aggarwal moved, seconded by Prof. Pasztor, that the CEGEP-level "basic science" courses not be counted for credit in the Minor in Science for Arts students. The motion carried. 312.2 Prof. Silvius moved, seconded by Prof. Franklin, that the Academic Committee accept the format of Science Minor Concentrations for Arts students outlined in document AC-97-69, with the understanding that departments would review their participation and course offerings and report back to the next Academic Committee meeting. The motion carried. 312.3 The issue of creating other types of Science Minor Concentrations for Arts students in, for example, the Life Sciences, was raised, as was the possibility of individual students putting together ad hoc Minor Concentrations. - Update on the SUS Hypercalendar 312.4 Mr. Bales-Kogan said that rather than create a duplication of existing professorial web pages, the Hypercalendar was now envisioned as a central index system that would link to professorial web pages. He said that there were two ways of dealing with information that the SUS would like to add to a page. Either the SUS could contact the professor and ask that the information be added, or the SUS could add the information to its own page. He said he would update the Academic Committee when the SUS has completed linking all the pages, and inform them as to which departments have pages and which do not. 312.5 Associate Dean de Takacsy asked that he be informed of the page's address when it is completed, in order that the Faculty of Science home page be linked to it.
