AC-96-20 FACULTY OF SCIENCE ACADEMIC COMMITTEE Minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday, October 22, 1996 at 3:00 p.m. in the Arts Council Room (160). PRESENT: Associate Dean de Takacsy (Chair), Professors Brawer, Franklin, Ingram, Norris, Pollard, Rigelhof, Silvius, Sittmann, Therien, Wechsler; H. Waluzyniec; S. Aggarwal, P. Jorgensen; J. DíAmico. DOCUMENTS: AC-96-12 to AC-96-14/14A AC-96-15 to AC-96-19 In the absence of Dean Shaver, Associate Dean de Takacsy called the meeting to order at 3:01 p.m. He welcomed Associate Dean E. Norris, representative from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and the student representatives, to the Academic Committee meeting. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA Associate Dean de Takacsy informed members that Item #6, Residence and Program Requirements (BSc Degree), would be chaired by Prof. Rigelhof. (1) MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 22, 1996. AC-96-12 Minute 111.1, Page 4, Enrolments for September 1996, second line, should read: í.....that this year new registration at McGill.....í Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Franklin, that the amended minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES Minute 110.1, Page 4, Accord-Cadre Franco-QuÈbÈcois Entre CPU, CDEFI & CREPUQ and Pan-Canadian Protocol on the transferability of University Credits (AC-96-9) 202.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that some of the information he had given to the Academic Committee on September 17, 1996 was not completely accurate. He had said that the first document was university policy; in fact the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research had exempted itself from participation in the accord. Associate Dean de Takacsy said that he would keep members informed of any further developments on these issues. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-96-13 (for information) (4) PHYSIOLOGY - MINOR IN NEUROSCIENCE: AC-96-14/14A (Minor Program Changes) 204.1 Prof. Wechsler clarified documents AC-96-14/14A by explaining that the Pharmacology courses, 549-300A and 549-301B, and the Psychiatry course, 555-301B, should be added to the Neuropharmacology course selection (Document AC-96-14A); and that Psychology 204-308A should be added to the list of Complementary Courses (Page 2, Document AC-96-14), such that the list should read: Biology 177-306A or Physiology 552-311A or Psychology 204-308A (add) Anatomy 504-321A Neurology & 531-310B Neurosurgery Prof. Wechsler moved, seconded by Prof. Franklin, that the changes to the Minor in Neuroscience be approved. The motion carried. (5) PSYCHOLOGY New Course: 204-495B Psychology Research Project AC-96-3 3 credits Prof. Franklin explained the reasons for the proposed course; a short discussion ensued. Prof. Franklin moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. - Minor Program Changes: Major, Honours & Faculty (Faculties of Arts & of Science) AC-96-16 Prof. Franklin moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the above changes be approved. The motion carried. (6) RESIDENCE AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS (BSc Degree) AC-96-17 Associate Dean de Takacsy gave the chair to Prof. Rigelhof, in order for Associate Dean de Takacsy to present the above item. 206.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy explained the reasons for the changes, pointing out that there was the potential for future problems due to the increasing number of students taking courses at other universities/ institutions, especially with regard to Minor programs. The proposed changes would apply to all programs in the Faculty of Science (Major, Honours, Faculty, Minor). The Faculty of Arts would be discussing this issue at a future date. After some discussion, Associate Dean de Takacsy moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the changes to the residence and program requirements be approved. The motion carried. (7) REPORT: FACULTY OF ARTS CURRICULUM REFORM AC-96-18 (for information) 207.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that it was appropriate that the Faculty of Science be aware that the Faculty of Arts was revising its curriculum. He said that at some point the Faculty of Science would have to react. The report had been approved by the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee, and would be presented to the Faculty of Arts meeting on October 24, 1996 for approval. He said that the changes could possibly cause difficulties for at least four departments (Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics & Statistics, Psychology). 207.2 There followed a discussion concerning the effect of the changes on departments in the Faculty of Science. Prof. Franklin said that the Department of Psychology would try to amend the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Reform. (8) OTHER BUSINESS There was no other business. 208.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy drew membersí attention to the circulated íDocuments For Information Onlyí (AC-96- 6, AC-93-61, AC-96-19).
