The Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FRQSC) is dedicated to the development of research and innovation in Quebec's social sciences, arts and humanities, covering a diverse range of disciplines, from the arts, literature and society, to organizational management, to international relations and development.

Start-up Program for New Research Professors
(Établissement de nouveaux professeurs-chercheurs)

This grant aims at:
- Facilitating the development, progress or completion of an individual research proposal for either a research project or program;
- Helping support a new generation of researchers and university instructors by assisting new professors to embark upon their careers, establish themselves as independent researchers and become competitive at the national and international levels.
- Fostering collaborations between new and established researchers;
- Consolidating the research system by supporting up-and-coming research professors and inciting new research professors who are beginning their careers to develop original research avenues.
Financial support - operating grant of up to $15,000 per year, including the equipment necessary to carry out the proposed research.
Grants are awarded annually for the period from April 1 to March 31 for up to three years. The grants are not renewable.
Eligibility Requirements
- Have a regular position leading to tenure in a Québec university. Applicants must hold this position in one or several Québec universities by June 1st preceding the fall applications. Refer to program for more details.
- Have successfully defended their doctoral dissertation before June 1st preceding the fall applications (applicants who have not defended their doctoral dissertation before the application deadline must obtain a letter from the appropriate authorities of their university stating that the dissertation defence will take place before June 1st);
- Applicants may request an extension of their eligibility period if they have interrupted or considerably delayed their career for family reasons. Applicants on maternity leave may request an extension of their eligibility period up to the maximum amount of time permitted under the Act respecting labour standards.
The following applicants are not eligible:
- Researchers who, on Agency’s competition deadline, have held a regular position for more than five years at a university in Québec, elsewhere in Canada or abroad;
- Hospital‐affiliated or Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux agency researchers;
- Researchers who have applied to this program three times during the eligibility period;
- As per an agreement between the three Fonds, researchers who apply for or receive funding from a Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé or a Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies career start‐up program (with the exception of the thematic provincial network support programs);
- Applicants already funded under this program.
Start-up Program for New Researcher-Creator-Professors

This grant aims to provide writers and artists in a university setting with access to individual research grants and to foster a new generation of artist-teachers-researchers.
Financial support - operating grant of up to $15,000 per year and includes the equipment necessary to carry out the proposed research.
Grants are awarded annually for the period April 1 to March 31. Grants are awarded for a maximum period of three years and they are not renewable.
Applications are due in the fall.

- Researchers who have submitted three applications to the program during their eligibility period;
- Researchers who have submitted an application to another research start-up program of one of Québec’s three Fonds de recherche;
- Researchers who are already funded through a research start-up program of one Québec’s three Fonds de recherche;
- Researchers who have already received funding through this program.

Research-Creation Support Program
(Appui à la recherche-création)

The objective of the program is to provide writers and artists in the university environment with access to research grants.
The financial support is an operating grant of $60,000 per year, up to a limit of $150,000 for 36 months. The grant awarded is complementary to the other sources of research funding. It is added to the grants, contracts, sponsorships and other funds available for research.

Support for Media Arts and Technologies

The program is open to all researcher-creators in Québec universities and their collaborators to support projects that contribute to the development of digital content.
Financial support from this program will be granted as an operating subsidy, which will vary according to the scope and length of the project. Funding may be granted for a period of 12 to 36 months. The maximum annual authorized amount for each of the components is $50,000. The total amount granted for each project will not exceed $100,000.

Support to Innovative Projects

The objective of the program is to support fundamental research centered on the development of new conceptual frameworks and perspectives, research that sheds new light on the complexity of social and cultural phenomena as well as applied research that favours a transfer of knowledge which goes beyond true and tried practices.
The financial assistance awarded consists of an operating subsidy that varies according to the scope of the project. It may reach a maximum of $25,000 (1) for a period varying between 6 and 18 months.
Please note that this program is not open every year.
Research Team Support Program

This program is targeted at university teams with team configuration (University or Partnership) at different stages of development (Emerging, Operational or Renewal), to support the implementation of their research programs.
Financial support
- Emergence Development Stage: maximum of $35,000/year for 2 years
- Operational and Renewal Development Stage: maximum of $177,000/year for 4 years
Letters of Intent (LOIs) are due in the spring; full applications are due in the fall.

Strategic Cluster Program
(Regroupements stratégiques)

A strategic cluster brings together researchers, research teams and student-researchers from various disciplines, academic units and institutions. Each cluster must demonstrate that it possesses the critical mass required to reach its objectives and foster excellence in research.
The main objective of the program is to strengthen the research sectors of excellence that could yield significant potential scientific, cultural, social and economic benefits for Québec. Through this program, FRQSC aims to:
- Foster the consolidation of large groups of researchers in different fields and university institutions to give impetus to the research system;
- Promote the emergence of research centres and networks in strategic sectors;
- Establish Québec researchers as leaders in their fields by supporting their participation in national and international research programs and their integration in large scientific networks;
- Foster knowledge transfers and partnerships with the potential users of the research results, in keeping with the Plan d’action en matière de transfert des connaissances 2011-2014, which was adopted by the Fonds;
- Contribute to the implementation of stimulating quality environments for new researcher-professors and train researchers and highly-qualified personnel;

This program aims at responding to innovative research needs identified by governmental, community, cultural and industrial milieu in Québec.
The grant amount and duration are announced at the call for proposals.
Special calls for proposals are launched throughout the year. Please consult the website for regular updates. A letter of intent may be required.
