Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF)
The LOF serves the infrastructure needs of individual researchers or groups of up to three researchers where there is a need to share infrastructure for research in related fields or to take advantage of complementary skills. It is not intended to serve the infrastructure needs of larger groups, centres, departments, or institutions.
A university may put forward a proposal for a current faculty member who holds a full-time academic appointment, or for a candidate the university is in the process of recruiting to a full-time academic faculty appointment.
Applicants must have pre-authorization to apply. Interested applicants must first contact their faculty or the Office of the Associate Provost (Academic Staff & Faculty Affairs).
The LOF has three streams. The type of application will depend upon which stream is chosen and the amount of funding requested. The maximum amount that can be requested through a LOF application is $2 million.
Stream 1: Research infrastructure alone
- If total eligible costs are less than $1 million, application deadlines are February 15, June 15, and Oct 15 of every year.
- If total eligible costs are between $1 and $2 million, the Notice of Intent is due December 15 and the full application on February 15 of every year.
Stream 2: Research infrastructure associated with a Canada Research Chair
- Total eligible costs of less than $1 million, application deadlines are in April and October of every year.
Stream 3: Research infrastructure from the CFI and research support from federal funding agencies
Applicants with faculty approval to apply for a LOF should contact the Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI) team for a consultation as soon as possible.
Applicants should refer to detailed timelines for upcoming competitions:
Each candidate must complete and have signed a Research Equipment and Space Needs Assessment Form. This document must be submitted to Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI) well in advance of the submission deadline.
For campus-based projects including renovations, you must contact Facilities Operations and Development 3-6 months (depending on scope) in advance of the submission deadlines.
We have developed tools and resources on how to finalized your CFI submission. Please contact the OSR Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI) team for a copy of these documents.
