Research Involving Humans
Ethics review and approval of research involving humans must be obtained before any recruitment or data collection occurs. The ethics review is conducted by one of the 5 McGill Research Ethics Boards (REBs) or by the REB of one of the McGill affiliated institutions listed below. The relevant REB to apply to primarily depends on departmental or faculty affiliation. Investigators located in, or who wish to recruit from or conduct research in, one of the McGill affiliated institutions listed below, must apply directly to the REB of that institution.
Click on the relevant REB to bring you to their website for specific application instructions, forms, submission deadlines and contact information.
Faculty of Agricultural&Environmental Sciences REB - for all units of the Faculty for research involving competent adults. Research involving minors and incompetent adults must be submitted to the REB-III for review. Research involving medically invasive measures, procedures or interventions must be submitted to the Faculty of Medicine REB for review.
Faculty of Medicine REB - for all units of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and the Shriner’s Hospital. This REB also has the mandate to review research conducted in more than one of the McGill affiliated hospital sites (Douglas Institute, MUHC, St. Mary’s Hospital Centre, Jewish General Hospital). If the study only involves one of these hospital sites, review is done by the relevant affiliated hospital REB.
REBs-I, II,III) – for all units in faculties not served by the above 2 REBs. Research involving medically invasive measures, procedures or interventions must be submitted to the Faculty of Medicine REB for review.
