The University, as the steward of public funds in support of research, is governed not only by its own internal policies, but also the requirements of our funding partners. Notable amongst these is the Federal Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) Agreement on the Administration of Agency Grants and Awards by Research Institutions. In developing our internal policies and procedures to govern compliance at the university, we incorporate external regulations and legislation.
As per McGill's Regulation on the Conduct of Research [.pdf] with academic freedom comes the responsibility to ensure that all research and scholarship:
- is informed by the principles of honesty, integrity, trust, accountability and collegiality;
- meets high scientific and ethical standards;
- is conducted with honest and thoughtful inquiry, rigorous analysis, and accountability for the use of professional standards; and
- seeks to increase knowledge in ways that do not harm but which benefit society."
The Research Integrity Officer at the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation), is available for consultations regarding the conduct of research, and as outlined in McGill's Research Misconduct Regulation Concerning Investigation [.pdf] is responsible for the investigation of allegations of research misconduct.
