On March 23, emeritus professor of mechanical engineering Michael Paidoussis was named Greek of the Year by the Montreal Hellenic Community amid celebrations for the 186th anniversary of Greek Independence Day. The award is the latest in a long series of honours for Prof. Paidoussis, who is a Fellow in both the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada. Born in Cyprus in 1935, Prof. Paidoussis has served as honorary consul of the Republic of Cyprus in Montreal since 1983.
Emilie Thomassot, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has received a glittering accolade for her recent study on elemental and isotopic variations in diamonds. In the March 23 issue of Science, one of the world's leading journals of original scientific research, Thomassot's article was an editor's pick as a highlight of recent geology literature.
A four-member team of McGill mechanical engineering students have proved themselves the nation's very best. At the 2007 Canadian Engineering Competition, held in Saskatoon March 8-11, Omar Azrak, Patrice Castonguay, Hugo Gagnon and Xavier Veillard took first place in the competition's most demanding category, Senior Design. The four also took home the Teamwork Award as the team with the best communication and cohesiveness.
The McGill Martlet's hockey team took silver at the national championships after losing 4-0 to the defending champion University of Alberta squad in the title game. Going into the championship tournament, the Martlets were ranked first in the country. However, the always-tough Pandas proved too much in the finals, handing the Martlets only their second loss of the season against CIS opponents.
