Program/course requirements and regulations vary depending on program, and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Theology students should refer to the appropriate page within this section for more information. The policies on this page, however, apply to all Undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Religious Studies.

Reassessments and rereads

Informal requests

In accordance with the Charter of Student Rights and subject to the conditions stated therein, students have the right to consult any written submission for which they have received a mark and the right to discuss this submission with the examiner. Before initiating a formal reassessment or reread, students are advised to request an informal review of any graded material.

If dissatisfied with the informal review students can proceed to request a formal review.

Formal requests

In a formal reassessment or reread, rather than re-correct the work and then grade it as they would have done themselves, reviewers assess the appropriateness of the original grade. If a grade is deemed unfair, it is changed, whether the new grade is higher or lower than the original–i.e., the reviewer's grade takes precedence over the original grade.

Reassessment of coursework

Requests for formal reassessment of coursework, including midterms, shall be made to the Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office within ten working days of the return of course work or the posting of the grade. If an informal review has been requested during this period, the ten working days will be deemed to begin from the point of completion of the informal review. A formal reassessment shall normally be completed within 20 working days, according to the following procedure:

  1. The Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office obtains from the student or the instructor the original of the work, including the comments and the grade, a copy of the assignment, and a copy of the syllabus.
  2. The Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office transmits the material for reassessment to the designated associated examiner for the course or, when there is no associate examiner available, to the Dean of Religious Studies, who then appoints an alternate associate examiner.
  3. When the reassessment is complete, and the associate examiner has submitted a report, the Student Affairs Office will inform both the student and the instructor of the result and will confirm with the instructor that any necessary grade change is made.

Rereads of final exams

Requests for formal rereads of final examinations must be made in writing to the Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office by March 31 for courses in the Fall term and by September 30 for courses in the Winter or Summer terms (these deadlines are not negotiable). Students are assessed a fee of $35.00 for such rereads.

  1. The Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office obtains from the instructor the examination and the examination script, including the comments and the grade, a copy of the syllabus and any examination guide provided to the class prior to the examination, and (if available) the grading key.
  2. The Faculty of Religious Studies Student Affairs office transmits examination materials to the designated associated examiner, or when there is no associate examiner available, to the Dean of Religious Studies, who then appoints an alternate associate examiner.
  3. When the reread is complete, and the associate examiner has submitted a report, the Student Affairs Office will inform both the student and the instructor of the result and will confirm with the instructor that any necessary grade change is made.
