It is our pleasure to announce a new Graduate Program Director, Dr. Naguib Mechawar!

Dr. Mechawar is the Director of the Mood, Anxiety and Impulsivity-Related Theme at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, and Director of the Douglas-Bell Canada Brain Bank. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Bell Senior Fellowship in Mental Health, the FRQ-S Chercheur-boursier Junior 2 Salary Award and, more recently, the CIHR New Investigator Award.  His main research interest is the neuroanatomy and neuroplasticity of limbic brain regions in major depression and suicide. Dr. Mechawar obtained his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the Université de Montréal and joined our department as an Assistant Professor in 2007. He is a successful researcher, supervisor, and teaches in several different departments. With Dr. Mechawar’s accomplishments as a researcher, teacher and supervisor, we feel certain that the Graduate Program will continue to thrive under his supervision.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Marco Leyton who has diligently, creatively and effectively developed the Graduate Program as Director for over the past 10 years while simultaneously conducting invaluable research into neurobiology of drug self-administration, addiction and addiction-related neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Leyton’s leadership and commitment have led to the immense success of our graduate program and our department is very appreciative of his many contributions as professor, researcher and Graduate Program Director.  We wish him much continued success as he continues his research  as two-time William Dawson Research Chair,  President-of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CCNP), and founding member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) to the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse (CCSA), an advisory body to the federal Health Minister.
