ADOLESCENT DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE: ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT STRATGIES

Presented in English with Simultaneous Translation in French

Adolescent depression is a prevalent, serious problem and a major challenge for clinicians, particularly as suicidal thoughts and behaviors are common in many but not all patients with depression.  There are factors above and beyond depression that contribute to suicidality and require distinct interventions.  The Division of Child Psychiatry at McGill University has invited two renowned clinicians/researchers to discuss clinical and academic work experiences with these vulnerable adolescents, focusing on the assessment and treatment of serious depression and suicidal risk.

Invited Speakers:

Dr. David Brent is Academic Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine and holds an Endowed Chair in Suicide Studies. He is Director of Services for Teens at Risk, a clinical service for effective psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions. Dr. Brent has been granted exceptional research awards by The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the American Association of Suicidology, and the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Johanne Renaud is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University. At the Douglas Mental Health Institute, her clinical/research is in the Outpatient Clinic of Depressive and Suicidal Disorders, and the Mood, Anxiety, and Impulsivity Disorders Program. Dr Renaud has received awards from the Standard Life as Senior Fellow in Teen Mental Health, and is in charge of the Centre for Breakthroughs in Teen Depression and Suicide Prevention.  She has received the Klerman Award given to a Young Investigator for exceptional research by the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression
