Professor Anthony C. Masi was reappointed to a second five-year term as Provost of McGill University effective 1 July 2010. Reporting directly to the Principal, the Provost is the University's chief academic officer after the Principal and the chief budget officer. The Provost is charged with leading the University’s core academic mission and maintaining McGill’s standing among the world’s top institutions of higher learning. He oversees the strategies, planning, development, implementation, and assessment of all academic priorities, policies and programs. The Provost is also entrusted with stewardship of the budget in order to ensure that the University’s financial resources are optimally distributed to support continuous innovation in research and teaching.

Dr. Masi has been Professor of Sociology since 1979 and has taught statistical analysis and computer applications at the graduate and undergraduate levels. His areas of specialization include sociology of the labour force, industrial policy, populaton studies, and the relationship between institutions and economic development in Italy. The Provost works in collaboration with members of his leadership team, the Office of the Associate Provosts, the Deans of Academic Units, and University Committees. The Office of the Provost provides the infrastructure and the direct support for the agenda of the Provost, including support for all aspects of his demanding portfolio.

Leadership Team

Dr. Morton J. Mendelson was appointed McGill's first Deputy Provost (Student Life & Learning) effective 17 July 2006. He serves as a central liaison among the University's senior administration, the Faculties, student organizations, and Senate. His charge is to ensure that the impact of university policies and practices on student life and learning is factored into decision making.

Dr. Mendelson is Associate Professor of Psychology. His work concerns same- and cross-sex relationships in adolescence and young adulthood and the relationship between self-esteem and body esteem. Learn more about his research here.
Dr. Martin Kreiswirth was first appointed Associate Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in February 2007. He has academic and administrative responsibility for graduate programs and postdoctoral experiences. The Associate Provost and Dean oversees Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the office that provides university-wide leadership and promotion of excellence for graduate and postdoctoral education at McGill.

Dr. Kreiswirth is Professor of English. He is a widely respected scholar of narrative and literary theory and an expert on the work of William Faulkner and Toni Morrison. Learn more about his research here.
Dr. Chandra Madramootoo has been Associate Vice-Principal (Macdonald Campus) and Dean of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences since August 2008. Dr. Madramootoo led the academic renewal and development of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Under his leadership, AES has seen the recruitment of new staff, significant increases in undergraduate and graduate enrolment, a revitalized Library and Learning Center, the construction of new Food and Nutrition labs, and the modernization of the Small and Large Animal Research Units.

Dr. Madramootoo is James McGill Professor of Bioresource Engineering. His areas of expertise include water table management, irrigation, drainage, water quality, watershed management, land reclamation, agricultural research, and international agriculture development. The Office of the Associate Provosts coordinates efforts in the areas of Policies, Procedures & Equity, Faculty Affairs & Resource Allocation, and Academic Staff & Priority Initiatives and brings together the Academic Personnel Office, Academic Management Office, and the Cyclical Unit Review Office.

Dr. Lydia White was appointed Associate Provost (Policies, Procedures & Equity) for a five-year term beginning 1 September 2010. She is responsible for regulations and policies relating to academic staff and for equity issues in the University context. Dr. White oversees the Cyclical Unit Review Office, annual reports for academic teaching units, and chairs the Joint Board-Senate Committee on Equity.

Dr. White is James McGill Professor of Linguistics and has been internationally recognized for pioneering the generative linguistic perspective on second language acquisition. Learn more about her research here.

Dr. Jan Jörgensen was granted a redesigned portfolio and appointed Associate Provost (Faculty Affairs & Resource Allocation) effective 1 September 2010. He oversees the Academic Management Office and the Office of the Budget. Dr. Jörgensen oversees the allocation of Canada Research Chairs, James McGill Chairs, and William Dawson awards, advises the Provost on aggregate resource allocations to Faculties and administrative units, and coordinates CFI dossiers with the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations).

Dr. Jörgensen is Professor in the Desautels Faculty of Management. His primary expertise lies in corporate strategy and stratefic management. Learn more about his research here.

Dr. Nathalie Cooke was appointed Associate Provost (Academic Staff & Priority Initiatives) for a three-year term effective 1 September 2010. She oversees the life cycle of academic staff from recruitment to retirement, is responsible for the operations of the Academic Personnel Office, develops strategic teaching and research initiatives, and assists academic administrators with academic advising and counselling in matters relating to regulations and policies.

Dr. Cooke is Professor of English. She is a recognized expert on the work of Margaret Atwood and is currently pursuing reaearch projects in food studies. Learn more about her work here.
