McGill University abides by the guidelines established by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) for research, testing and teaching programs involving the use of animals. For animal acquisitions, McGill University follows the CCAC Guide to the Care and Use of Experimental Animals, Vol. 1, 2nd Ed., 1993.
To comply with CCAC recommendations, animals must be acquired through centralized systems in order to ensure they are acquired only for protocols that have been approved through the protocol review process, and to limit the numbers and species of animals acquired to the numbers and species approved.
McGill University recognizes the importance of having centralized animal ordering for protocol compliance. As such, each Facility Animal Care Committee is required to have a procedure to ensure that CCAC guidelines for animal purchasing are followed. For more information, call 514-398-2837.
