To all members of the McGill community
By now, I am sure most of you are aware of the terrible devastation wrought upon parts of the Philippines a few days ago by the powerful Typhoon Haiyan. The toll of dead and injured continues to rise and damage to homes and property has left hundreds of thousands without shelter.
An urgent mobilization of aid has begun and requires an enormous effort. Those who wish to contribute may do so best through recognized disaster-relief and charity organizations and I encourage you to help if you can, as soon as possible. The Canadian government has pledged to match funds donated to registered Canadian charities. To access the Canada Revenue Agency’s list of approved charities, please visit this site.
Professor Andre Costopoulos, Dean of Students, has been in touch with the students who come to us from the Philippines so that they are aware of counselling and other help available to them at McGill.
For students who are looking for additional counselling help, we have a number of resources available, and staff are urged to contact the Employee Assistance Program through Longpré consultants at 514 843-7009.
I extend my condolences to those who have lost friends and loved ones and who are suffering as a result of this disaster.
Professor Suzanne Fortier
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
