Research Areas

Her area of expertise is the hermeneutics and phenomenology of the twentieth century, especially Gadamer, and nineteenth century German philosophy, with a particular focus on the work of Fichte, Humboldt, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard.  Professor Hoffmann has published articles on Kant, Hegel and Gadamer.  She was a member of the  FQRSC (Fonds quebecois de recherche sur la societé et la culture funded) research team for 2002-2005 with colleagues from the Université de Montréal on "Phenomenology and Ethics." Professor Hoffmann is presently involved in two ongoing research projects. The first addresses the connection between philosophy, public culture and social and political practice in the nineteenth century and centers around the work of Fichte and Nietzsche. The second explores conceptions of the self in contemporary European philosophy. In particular, Professor Hoffmann is interested in the notion of autonomy and responsibility, and the kind of a moral self that emerges from contemporary hermeneutics and critical theory.
