Quebec Inter-University Elective Rotations

Inter-university rotations are less than 12 months in duration (trainees remain based and paid at their home school). Inter-university rotations to other Québec faculties are available at: Université de Montréal, Université Laval and Université de Sherbrooke.

To find out whether and where your rotation site is accredited, please see CMQ website.

A "carte mobile" is an inter-university rotation that is 12 months or longer in duration (trainees are based and paid by the host school). To apply for a "carte mobile", trainees must submit a written request to their Program Director, which must include details of the pedagogical plan for that year of training. While on a "carte mobile", remuneration is the responsibility of the host hospital who, in turn, will bill the RAMQ according to the usual procedure. Please note that in the case of Fellows, funding will continue to be provided by the approved sponsor, since the stipend is not paid by the RAMQ (Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec).

Eligibility:

  • Residents: These rotations must meet the pedagogical requirements of the program as approved by the program director. Only exceptionally are inter-university rotations done at the beginning of training. The evaluation regulations and forms of the home university are used during these rotations.
  • Fellows: Trainees doing post-residency training (fellowship or formation complémentaire) should complete all required rotations at McGill University. In exceptional circumstances, an elective rotation at another Quebec university may be approved with the explicit authorization of the Program Director and the Associate Dean.

Requirements:

  • The minimum length for an inter-university rotation is one period. Requests for a rotation shorter than that will be refused, unless it is a longitudinal rotation. If there will be absences during the rotation (i.e. vacation days), this must be clearly indicated in the comments section of the BCI request form.
  • Inter-university rotations must follow the period calendar.
  • As far as longitudinal rotations are concerned, trainees must clearly indicate in the Comments section of the BCI request form the training schedule for their rotation (example: one day per week during 3 months).
  • The evaluation regulations and forms of the home university are used during these rotations.

Steps to Apply:

  • Trainees must submit a CREPUQ request via the BCI system, carefully following the Instructions Guide when filling a request.
  • Once completed, trainees should make a PDF copy of the request and send it to their Program Director and their Program Administrator for approval.
  • The Program Administrator reviews the request to make sure it is correctly completed according to the Instructions Guide (see above).
  • Once the decision is made (whether approved or denied), the Program Director's digital signature/name must be added on the PDF and the Program Administrator should send the PDF to the PGME RESIDENCY COORDINATOR to process.
  • If the PGME office does not receive the decision from the program, the request will remain pending.
  • THE PGME RESIDENCY COORDINATOR MUST RECEIVE THE REQUEST AT LEAST TWO CALENDAR (2) MONTHS BEFOREHAND. REQUESTS MADE WITH SHORTER NOTICE WILL BE REFUSED.
  • Once a request is submitted, trainees need to check the status to make sure it is approved by both their home and host university before the start date of their rotation.
  • Arrangements should then be made between the “home” program and the "host" program. Trainees who arrive at a "host" university without prior approval may be asked to return to their "home" university.
