Members of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit team are engaged in numerous investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored pain research projects on the premises, and collaborate extensively with other scientists and clinicians at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research in Pain of McGill University, as well as other universities and hospitals, both in Quebec and across Canada.


Research activity and funding has increased dramatically in recent years. Peer-reviewed grants have been awarded by numerous agencies including the MUHC Research Institute, FRSQ, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Lottie and John Hecht Foundation, Health Canada and the NIH. Total secured research funding to Pain Centre researchers in the past 3 years is over CDN $3million. In addition to principal investigators, current research staff includes two research nurses, one study coordinator, one PhD student and one research assistant.


Research currently underway at the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit includes:

  • Clinical trials of safety and efficacy of cannabis
  • Soy supplementation for prevention of chronic post-operative and neuropathic pain
  • Characteristics and patterns in patients with widespread body pain
  • Complementary medicine use
  • Waiting list patterns
  • Development of a national database of patients with neuropathic pain
  • Establishment of quantitative sensory testing facilities and protocols
  • Trials of novel mechanisms for complex regional pain syndrome
  • Novel approaches to invasive pain-relieving interventions
