Student Responsibilties

Prior to the Field Experience:

  • Verify your academic standing and successful completion of prerequisite courses on Minerva. If you need assistance with this step, please contact an advisor.
    DISE Education Advisors
    B.Ed Phys. Ed Advisor

Students entering FE 3 must have completed the required number of credits in their subject area. See the course description in Minerva for details, or contact an advisor.
  • Register for the field experience on Minerva;
  • About 3-4 months before the field experience, students registered for an EDFE course will receive an e-mail at their official @mail.mcgill.ca address with instructions for accessing the online placement form.
  • Sign in (top left corner of the page) and submit your form by the date indicated in your e-mail.
  • Students who register after the initial notification will be contacted individually by e-mail or phone as the database updates. Please note that early registration for all EDFE courses is strongly encouraged!
  • Don't forget to update your Montreal mailing address and telephone numbers on Minerva.
  • Check your McGill e-mail regularly; the Office frequently uses this method to communicate important information. McGill Student Email Policy
  • When your placement is ready, you will receive an e-mail notification. View your placement details here by signing in (top left corner of the page).
  • You may be required by law to submit a declaration concerning your judicial record to the school board where you are assigned. See the Judicial Record Policy for information.
  • If you are an international student, you must hold a valid co-op/internship work permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. See the detailed application instructions here. Be aware that processing times vary for this application--apply as soon as possible after your acceptance into the B.Ed program.
  • It's your responsibility to be familiar with the policies and rules for Field Experiences, and to read the Code of Ethics for Student Teachers.

During the Field Experience:

  • The Absence Policy explains the steps to take if you must be absent from your field experience.
  • All absences must be made up, usually at the end of the Field Experience. Contact the Office and your cooperating teacher to make arrangements. Do not make plans to leave the area during the week after your field experience--you cannot predict if you will need to make up extra days because of illness.
  • Supervisors will, based on the teaching schedule provided by the student teacher and cooperating teacher, visit schools to see students in action and complete the formative assessment. This visit can happen unannounced. Supervisors will have the opportunity to see student teachers in a variety of contexts, and will be able to offer counsel to the student teacher in terms of handling more challenging classrooms. Supervisors may make extra visits as approved by the Office of Student Teaching.
  • When McGill field supervisors come for a formative assessment visit, it is expected that they will remain for the entire lesson. To make the most of this observation, your supervisor will want to speak with you before you teach the lesson, and discuss the lesson with you once it is over.
  • If you encounter difficulties in your Field Experience, discuss them with your cooperating teacher, school administrator, university supervisor, or the Office. Don't wait until the problem becomes overwhelming.

After the Field Experience:

  • In order to receive a mark in this course, you must return one copy of all completed and signed evaluation forms to the Office the Monday after your Field Experience ends. To confirm which forms are necessary for your program and year, click here.
  • Use the "Feedback on this Field Experience" form if you'd like to share any thoughts with the Office.
