Fellowship Highlights

Busy Clinical Sports Medicine Fellowship opportunity with ample opportunity for research activities.

The fellow will work with a team of fellowship trained sports medicine surgeons with emphasis on reconstructive surgery of the knee & shoulder. Cases will include ACL reconstruction, Total & Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty, Osteotomies, revision surgery, open & arthroscopic instability repairs as well as open, mini open, and arthroscopic cuff repairs. The fellow will be exposed to both arthroscopic and open techniques. The fellow will primarily be involved with ambulatory surgeries, however there is also exposure to inpatient surgeries and trauma.

Work will be based at the MUHC center, and affiliated off-site institutions.

The fellow will also be able to participate in a variety of other types of cases according to his/her interest.

There will be ample clinic exposure in various outpatient sports medicine clinics including the McGill sports medicine clinic, and the Shriners Adolescent Sports Medicine Clinic , where the fellow will be involved in the care of High School, varsity & elite level athletes. The fellow will work closely with the McGill primary care sports medicine group in the care of these athletes. There will also be interactions with the training, rehabilitation and coaching staff of these athletes.

The fellow will also have the opportunity to be involved in the care of professional & elite athletes as members of our group are the team physicians for the Montreal Canadiens (NHL), Montreal Alouettes (CFL), Montreal Impact (A League Soccer), Cirque de Soleil, McGill Varsity athletics, and various provincial & national level athletes.

There will be a regular didactic learning component to the fellowship, where the fellow along with the residents will participate in regular Subspecialty teaching rounds, McGill sports medicine Grand rounds, sports medicine journal club, biweekly departmental grand rounds and regular resident teaching seminars.

The fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in various research & academic activities; Including resident teaching, lectures, presentations, and both clinical and basic science research projects. At least one project suitable for presentation & publication will be expected.

1. Sports Medicine OPD Clinics

2. Operating Room

To coordinate OR coverage (MGH, LGH, SHC) of entire Sports Team with Chief Resident on service.

Trauma OR (on sports days)

May attend other OR’s according to fellow’s interest if cleared with Sports Service Chief resident, the other service’s chief resident and the appropriate staff.
May be required to help cover other OR functions within the Orthopaedic department when necessary.

** Important to note that in general residents should have priority access to most cases & the fellow will be expected to take on an intraoperative teaching role with the residents.

** Certain cases will be deemed to be resident cases (eg. basic knee scope, diagnostic glenohumeral scope, primary TKA) & fellow cases (eg. complex knee ligament reconstructions, arthroscopic knee & shoulder reconstructive procedures, revision procedures).

All case designations will be at the complete discretion of the attending staff.

3. Call Requirements

 As per departmental policy, the fellow is expected to take call with the MGH Sports Medicine Service (approx. 1 in 9). The fellow will function at the level of staff call & work with the resident team on call that day / weekend.

For on-call purposes, the fellow will be assigned to one individual Staff (Burman, Lenczner, Marien, Marien) for a 3 month block. The fellow will be on call with his/her assigned staff during that period.

On occasion, there may be unique/complex cases to be done on week-ends or evenings on-call (eg. knee dislocations). The fellow may be asked to be available to participate in these cases.

4. Teaching responsibilities

Work with the Sports Medicine Chief resident & Dr. Burman to help organize academic teaching activities within the Sports Group

  • Sub-specialty Sports Rounds
  • Sports Med. Journal Club
  • Knee / Shoulder Arthroscopy seminars

Fellow will be responsible for participating in other teaching activities involving the sports medicine group including:

  • Resident Teaching Seminars (Thursday pm)
  • Orthopaedic Grand Rounds (Thursday am)

5. Research responsibilities

1 Research project (clinical or basic science) will be expected from the fellow during the year, and will be presented at the annual resident research day with the visiting professor.

1 paper / manuscript suitable for publication or presentation at a national / international meeting will be expected. (This can include the fellow’s visiting professor project, an additional research project, a case report, a book chapter, review article, etc.)
