Study away

Studying at another university is a wonderful opportunity, the benefits of which can go far beyond academic learning. It can enrich your undergraduate education by enabling you to develop broader perspectives in your fields of study, enhance skills in cross-cultural communication and critical thinking applicable to your everyday life, and provide you with a chance for personal growth.

Important Announcements

GRADUATING STUDENTS: As of the fall 2011 term, students who are on any type of study away during their graduating term WILL NOT be able to graduate at the end of their final term; instead, these students must select a graduation term (on Minerva) for the term following their study away.

Study-away information sessions

Study away information sessions will resume in February and March 2012 and will be announced on this site.

Options for study away

Quick links to frequently-used study-away forms

  • Arts OASIS Course Approval Form [.pdf]
This form is required for study away during the Fall and Winter terms and is used for pre- or post-approval of host university courses as McGill equivalences. It must be submitted to Arts OASIS.
You are encouraged, although not required, to have this form completed prior to leaving. Each McGill unit must assess courses for correspondence to theirs. Since each department or program unit functions differently, please consult the revelant department adviser to determine when they are willing to assess and approve your courses: prior to or upon your return from your studies. Provide the adviser with detailed course descriptions and course syllabi (including methods of evaluation and reading lists).
  • CULTURE, LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE COURSES: Regardless of the language of instruction, these courses must be assessed by the appropriate McGill unit before they can be approved for credit.
  • Courses taken as electives only from the following units will be approved by Arts OASIS upon completion and receipt of official transcript and appropriate course descriptions: Communication Studies (COMS), English (ENGL), French Language & Literature (FREN), Jewish Studies (JWST), Linguistics (LING) and Philosophy (PHIL). Please provide Arts OASIS with detailed course descriptions and course syllabi (which must include methods of evaluation and reading lists).
  • Enrolment Confirmation Form [.pdf]
This form is to be submitted to Arts OASIS once you have begun your studies at the host university. On the basis of the information you provide, we will complete any outstanding course approvals while you are away.
