Soylent moves from fiction to the marketplace

The Montreal Gazette: (by Joe Schwarcz) Harry Harrison’s 1966 science-fiction novel Make Room! Make Room! focused on the problem of insufficient resources created by an unchecked population explosion. A shortage of meat prompted the creation of “Soylent,” a product made from soy and lentils. The 1973 movie Soylent Green was based on Harrison’s novel, but the plot underwent a dramatic change. In the movie, “Soylent,” rather than being made from plants, was made from a more unusual source giving rise to the classic line: “Soylent Green is people!” Read more
