Montreal Gazette (blog) - When Jackie Robinson came to play - John Thompson explores baseball and race at McGill

Published: 9 March 2011

On the heels of last week's tribute to Jackie Robinson, historian John H. Thompson comes to McGill to talk about race, baseball and the Montreal Royals player who broke the colour ban in professional baseball.

Thompson, a former McGill professor who now teaches at Duke University, is working on a book about Enos Slaughter (1916-2002), a Hall of Fame baseball player from North Carolina. A specialist in 19th and 20th century North American history, Thompson uses Slaughter's story to ponder the broader issues of gender, race, class and celebrity in America.

The free public lecture, Baseball and race in Canada: the case of Jackie Robinson, takes place Wednesday, March 9 at 3 p.m. in Room 232 of the Leacock Building.
