McGill University named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers
Sustainability program, support for diversity among university’s strengths
McGill University has been named one of Canada’s Top 100 employers for 2009 in the October 13 issue of Maclean’s magazine, on newsstands Oct. 2.
The honour recognizes the University’s efforts in a number of areas, including its strong support for diversity, an active sustainability program, the University’s excellent pension benefits and also the park-like downtown campus where most of McGill’s employees work.
“We are delighted to be recognized for the efforts we continue to make to improve our workplace,” said Associate Vice-Principal (Human Resources) Lynne Gervais.
“McGill is already known worldwide for its groundbreaking research and scholarship,” Ms. Gervais said. “It is very gratifying to be known as well for our leadership as an employer, for all the things we do to try to make McGill a stimulating, interesting, rewarding place to work.”
The award is based both on an application submitted by the employer and by research conducted by Mediacorp, which manages the competition and selection process and which publishes detailed reasons for each employer's selection online (at Eluta.ca). This year, Mediacorp editors reviewed the recruitment histories of more than 71,000 employers across Canada and invited roughly one-third of these to apply.
There are two main qualifications to be considered for the competition: an organization must be a leader in its field in attracting and retaining “quality employees” and it must offer good job prospects.
McGill, which has ranked consistently among the top 25 universities in the world, according to the widely respected Times Higher Education Supplement, offers its employees a stimulating work environment that encourages innovation, places great emphasis on improving the environment and offers a generous and comprehensive benefits program, including an outstanding pension plan.
McGill, Canada’s leading university, has two campuses, 11 faculties, 10 professional schools, 300 programs of study and more than 33,000 students. Since 2000, more than 800 professors have been recruited to McGill to share their energy, ideas and cutting-edge research. McGill attracts students from 160 countries around the world. Almost half of McGill students claim a first language other than English – including 6,000 francophones – with more than 6,200 international students making up almost 20 per cent of the student body.
