McGill garners 11 Canada Research Chairs and $10 million in funding

Explorations range from neurolinguistics to kidney disease

Eleven McGill University researchers, exploring issues from neurolinguistics to vertebrate paleontology to kidney disease, are among 123 recently appointed Canada Research Chairs announced Tuesday, Sept. 30.

McGill received five Tier-1 and six Tier-2 Chairs, including one new CRC and 10 renewals, for a total of $10 million. In addition, the Canada Foundation for Innovation is investing $343,164 to fund research infrastructure essential to the work done by Ross Andersen, McGill’s Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Health.

An investment of $116,400,000 to fund 123 Canada Research Chairs (CRC) from 37 universities across the country was made by the Canada Research Chairs Program. The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is also contributing $4,471,128 to support research infrastructure essential to the work being performed by 25 of the chair holders.

The Government of Canada created the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program in 2000 to establish 2,000 research professorships across the country by 2008, with the aim of making Canada one of the world's top five countries for research and development. Since then, McGill has used its CRCs to recruit an exceptional group of international researchers as well as to repatriate a number of outstanding Canadian and Québécois researchers from postings abroad.
