McGill adds to the ranks of CRCs

Published: 31 March 2010

University researchers awarded 18 Canada Research Chairs

Eighteen leading McGill researchers have been awarded new or renewed Canada Research Chairs (CRC), announced recently by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

The CRC program was created to enable Canadian universities to attract and retain established and emerging world-class researchers. McGill research projects that will benefit from the new funds include research into infectious diseases, particle physics and advanced materials for micro and nanosystems.

Of McGill's 18 CRCs (the second-largest number of CRC awards given to a Canadian university in this competition) McGill received seven Tier-1 and 11 Tier-2 Chairs, including 14 renewals, and four new Chairs for a total of $15,300,000. The decade-old federal program will invest $165.5 million in 187 newly awarded or renewed Canada Research Chairs at 44 Canadian universities this year.

The $15.3 million awarded to McGill for the four new chairs and renewal of 14 others includes $480,000 from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for research infrastructure in support of three of the projects.
