June 13: 8th Annual Public Men’s Health Day
Too many men put off getting a complete health exam, which can lead to neglecting treatment for a range of health issues. McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) urologist Dr. Peter Chan and a volunteer team of 20 doctors and nurses want to make it easy for men to look after their health. To that end, they are holding the 8th Annual Public Men’s Health Day on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Les Ailes.
Men carrying a valid Quebec Medicare card may take the exam, which lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes blood pressure and cholesterol checks, as well as a prostate exam for men over 40. All participants will receive a response to their tests within six weeks. Participants whose results indicate a reason for follow up will be contacted sooner. To date, Dr. Chan and his team of volunteers have tested approximately 3000 men, half of which have been contacted to suggest a follow up with their doctor.
Montreal radio personality Ted Bird has bravely offered to take the simple health exam as a way of helping raise awareness about the need for men to take charge of their own health care.
