Has 'Breast is best' gone too far?

Published: 3 April 2009

In the April issue of The Atlantic, Hanna Rosin weighs the arguments on breastfeeding over bottle-feeding and in so doing creates a ripple of controversy: "So overall, yes, breast is probably best," Rosin decides. "But not so much better that formula deserves the label of 'public health menace,' alongside smoking..." Rosin relies heavily on research by McGill's Michael Kramer for her article. Follow up articles appear in the NYTimes and the Chicago Tribune, in which the article concludes: "Dr. Michael Kramer, scientific director of the Institute of Human Development at McGill, puts it succinctly. 'If a woman wants to breastfeed, that's good but it's her choice. There are other ways to be a good mother.'"
