FIT@McGill pilot project launched

Published: 5 September 2001

Despite mounting evidence that regular exercise yields tremendous dividends, many people find it difficult to incorporate physical activity into their daily life. To respond to the most common reasons offered for not exercising -- lack of time or lack of money -- McGill University is launching a new staff fitness program which it hopes will prove widely popular. If the pilot project is successful this year, it may become a regular feature of campus culture.

Starting the week of September 17, McGill faculty and staff will participate in one of eight courses designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes. With the encouragement and support of the University’s administration, the Athletics Department is staggering the courses over the lunch break and ensuring that several are offered on the Lower Campus (Presbyterian College auditorium, 3495 University).

For those who wish a somewhat contemplative exercise, there’s Tai Chi, Pilates, Hatha Yoga, or a weekly Walking Club. Others who prefer more strenuous activity to stimulate the heart and pump up the muscles can take classes in group cycling, aerobics, aqua fitness or body design at the Sports Complex. The new Fit@McGill courses run for approximately 45 minutes, leaving time to grab a quick bite or shower before returning to work. Towel service and monthly locker contracts may be arranged for a fee, or participants can bring their own towel and lock each time.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the program, say the organizers, is the price. At only $11.50 (tax included) per 13 week course, McGill personnel may register for classes at a fraction of the cost they would pay at their community gym. "We are underwriting the cost of the new Program as an investment in the well-being of our employees," says Vice-Principal Morty Yalovsky. "We’ll be evaluating the benefits through surveys to determine the level of enthusiasm and satisfaction."

Registration for the Staff Fitness program will be accepted at the Client Services office (G-20C) in the Sports Complex located at 475 Pine Avenue. A valid McGill I.D. card is required. In the unlikely event that not enough people register to justify offering the course, the money will be refunded. Discussions are also underway to initiate a similar program for the Macdonald Campus in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue.
