On Feb. 22, McGill will celebrate its 12th annual Bassoon Day by welcoming this year’s special guest, Ole Kristian Dahl of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, Germany.
The Pension Administration Committee (PAC) is calling for nominations from active and retired administrative and support staff to fill the position of Administrative and Support Staff Representative. The position, to be filled by a current employee who is an active member of the Plan as of Dec. 31, 2013, is a three-year term commencing immediately following the Annual Meeting held on May 2, 2014. Lunchtime information sessions will be held to answer your questions concerning pay equity. All staff are welcome, whether you are eligible for an adjustment payment or not. The sessions will help you understand who is eligible for a pay equity adjustment and how the adjustments were calculated. It is important for employees who have questions to attend the information sessions before making specific enquiries to HR.
The Centre for the study of democratic Citizenship is organizing a roundtable on the Fair Elections Act, co-sponsored by the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP) on Friday, Feb. 21 at noon in the ballroom of Thomson House (3650 McTavish St.). The roundtable will be moderated by Miriam Fahmy (Institut de Nouveau Monde) and the roundtable participants are: Éric Bélanger (McGill University), André Blais (Université de Montréal), Youri Cormier (Apathy is Boring), Miriam Lapp (Elections Canada), Stephen Maher (Postmedia News) and Leslie Seidle (IRPP).
On Feb. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at SSMU Ballroom (3800 McTavish Street) come learn more about Tibet, a mystique-filled land of monks in the Himalayas. Guest speaker Ugen Wangchuk, the National Director of Students For a Free Tibet Canada, will speak about the current developments in Tibet and the solidarity and support of neighbouring countries. Performances include Tibetan opera songs by Sonam Chokey, a traditional Tibetan dance by Tenzing Musu and a Bharatanatyam performance by dancers from Ginette Dion’s dance studio, Sattvika Danse.
Additional funding for universities key to ensure Canada’s competitiveness on world stage
McGill applauds the Government of Canada’s commitment to increase funding for university research, as announced today as part of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s budget. In particular, McGill welcomes the creation of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund.

Don’t miss the unique seven-week public lecture Mini-Science series, “The Science of Music.” The series starts with an introduction on how our brains learn music and concludes with a look at microbes and music.
