Students at the Faculty of Law will launch the second annual edition of the student magazine Contours: Voices of Women in Law on Tuesday, April 8. This non-profit publication showcases the original written and artistic work, in French and English, by women students and faculty members. The issue focuses on the broad theme of “values” and features an interview with the Honourable Claire L’Heureux-Dubé, retired justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Medical Students’ Society, in conjunction with Héma-Québec, is hosting a four-day blood drive starting today (Monday, Sept. 17) to Thursday (Sept. 20) at the McConnell Engineering building (corner of University and Milton). You can donate blood every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (6 p.m. on Wednesday). Organizers are hoping to have more than 500 people make a donation over the four-day drive. Some fascinating research from Computer Science Professor Derek Ruths about how the Twitterverse responded the launch this week of Apple’s new iPhone 5. Ruths and his team processed more than 30 million Tweets generated on Wednesday, the day of the launch and measured a variety of trends. They looked at gender breakdown, where the chatter was coming from and hot topics. There were also some surprising findings in terms of language and the sheer volume of interest in this event.
The weather was perfect, the crowds were large, but not too big, and the burgers and dogs were delicious. Principal Heather Munroe-Blum’s barbecue for staff and students went without a hitch today with about 3,500 people lining up at four food stations for a burger, a veggie burger or a hot dog, along with chips and drinks.

Kudos to the Engineering Undergraduate Society for the hefty contribution they made to a national children’s charity from the proceeds of last spring’s Open Air Pub Lite. As reported in the McGill Tribune, the OAP management team kicked in $15,000 to the President’s Choice Children’s Charity (PCCC), which helps disadvantaged children across Canada. Great to see students getting involved and making a difference in the world around them.
Every time at this year, a remarkable group of young people from around the world show up on McGill’s doorstep to spend a year studying, working on a special project, sharing a vast array of experience and generating tons of potential to go out and change the world. They are the Sauvé Scholars, and, thanks to the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation, they get to visit McGill for a year, stay in a fabulous house on Dr. Penfield Ave., and enjoy what could well be one of the most important years of their young lives.
At its September 4 meeting, the Board of Directors of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) unanimously accepted the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Committee and appointed Normand Rinfret as MUHC Director General and Chief Executive Officer for a four-year mandate effective immediately. The Selection Committee comprised representatives of the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec, the Agence de santé et de services sociaux de Montréal, McGill University and the MUHC Board of Directors.
