McGill student-athletes merit 17 scholarships at Quebec Foundation awards gala

Mariam Sylla, Cedric McNicoll and Katia Clement-Heydra highlighted a group of 17 McGill athletes who received bursaries at the 29thannual Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence awards gala, held at the Sheraton Laval on Nov. 25.

A total 86 athletic scholarships — valued at a combined $218, 750 — were issued, including 49 recruitment bursaries.

Game MVP Tim Jones of Lake Jackson, Texas, gave himself a pretty special birthday gift with a complete game, eight-strikeout performance as McGill cruised to a 6-1 victory over Concordia to capture the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association national championship, Sunday, at Gary Carter Field on the grounds of Trudeau Park.

Two McGill athletes among CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians

Two student-athletes from McGill are among the CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadians for the 2013-14 season announced Tuesday by Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Representing the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec conference are McGill standouts Mariam Sylla, a basketball player and pharmacology student, as well as Cédric McNicoll, a hockey player and accounting major.

Coaching tandem of Boies and Hilaire takes over helm of McGill football team

Offensive coordinator Patrick Boies and defensive coordinator Ronald Hilaire – both full-time employees at the University – will lead the McGill Redmen football team as “co-coaches” effective immediately, in light of the recent resignation of head coach Clint Uttley.

Goodwin revels in rout over Ravens as lacrosse team win streak at eight

Connor Goodwin netted a hat-trick and added four assists as the McGill men’s lacrosse team routed second-place Carleton 18-3 at Molson Stadium, Saturday, extending their perfect record to 8-0 in regular season play.

Welence wondrous as baseball Redmen double Carabins, extend win streak to five

Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J., continued his torrid pace and collected three hits and as many runs batted in as the McGill men’s baseball team doubled the Montreal Carabins 4-2 at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park, Wednesday.

The result extended McGill’s unblemished record to five consecutive victories in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association.

McGill hoops coach DeAveiro takes Canada to U-17 tourney title in Troyes

David DeAveiro, head coach of the McGill men’s basketball team, has guided the Canadian national cadet team to a four-game sweep at a tournament in Troyes, France. Canada cruised to an 89-62 decision over Argentina, on Aug 2, in their final preparation game before heading to the FIBA under-17 world championships in Dubai, Aug. 8-16.

Montrealer Jerome Desrosiers, a 6-foot-7 forward, was named tournament MVP.

Five athletes, including three-time Olympic gold medalist Kim St-Pierre of Chateauguay, Que., a former Montreal Canadiens forward and a pair of ex-Montreal Alouettes football players, have been selected for induction to the McGill University Sports Hall of Fame.
