Swimmer Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., and hockey player Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., were named male and female athletes of the year, respectively, at the 36th annual McGill varsity sports awards gala, held at the Holiday Inn Midtown, Thursday evening.
Medical student named Team MVP at McGill football awards gala

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a third-year medical student from St. Hilaire, Que., took home the Students’ Society Trophy as most valuable player and also received the Dan Pronyk memorial trophy as the team’s top offensive player at the 29th annual Friends of McGill Football awards gala held at the Holiday Inn Midtown hotel on April 6.
Apap wins McGill’s first RSEQ men’s individual alpine ski title since 2006

David Apap, a member of McGill’s men’s alpine ski team finished fourth in a Giant Slalom race at Mt. Stoneham, Friday, but earned enough points to win the conference’s individual scoring title by 85 points at the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RESQ) championship meet over the weekend.
It marked the first RSEQ title by a McGill male since 2006 when Nicolas Zyromski finished first overall.
Hébert leads McGill to consolation final victory over Ottawa at CIS Basketball tournament

Gabriela Hébert, a sophomore from Chicoutimi, Que., came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points as the sixth-seeded McGill University women’s basketball team waltzed to a convincing 71-50 victory over Ottawa in the consolation round final at the CIS Final Eight championship to finish fifth overall.
Not a bad result for the Quebec conference champions, who did not crack the CIS weekly Top 10 national poll once throughout the season.
Redmen erase double-digit deficit to finish fifth at CIS basketball championships

Sophomore Nathan Joyal of St. Lazare, Que., came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, including five treys, as the McGill’s men’s basketball team rallied from an early 10-point deficit to defeat Victoria 80-68 and finish fifth overall at the CIS Final Eight championship in Scotiabank Place, Sunday.
Carleton won their ninth national title in 11 years with a resounding 92-42 victory over Lakehead. In the bronze-medal affair, Ottawa defeated Acadia 92-85.

Three most certainly is a charm. Yesterday’s rare tripleheader, in which McGill hosted three playoff games (women’s hockey and men’s and women’s basketball), couldn’t have been any more charmed as all three McGill teams came away with important wins.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a game-high 14 points as McGill overwhelmed UQAM 68-42 in Quebec university men’s basketball action before a Parent’s Day crowd of 342 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
The Redmen moved back into sole possession of first place atop the RSEQ conference standings with a 6-2 record, two points ahead of Concordia (5-3) and Bishop’s (5-3).

The Martlets track and field team set the tone for a very successful weekend for McGill varsity teams by finishing first at the Sherbrooke Invitational meet on Saturday. Freshman Caroline Tanguay of St. Hubert, Que., won a pair of gold medals and senior Sarah McCuaig of Waterloo, Ont., claimed gold and silver. The team racked up 101 points, edging out the second-place Vert & Or by the slimmest of margins at 0.5 points.
Tanguay won the high jump with a leap of 1.65 metres and finished atop the podium in the pole vault with a distance of 3.35m.
