The McGill Faculty of Medicine, established in 1823 as the Montreal Medical Institution, was the first medical faculty founded in Canada. New institutions have taken up research and the Lady Davis Research Institute of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital over the past ten years has emerged as an equal partner with the two adult institutions. The Research Institute of the Douglas Hospital is recognized throughout the world for its contributions to neuroscience and psychiatric research, and the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children contains one of the largest and most successful units in the world devoted to research on crippling diseases. In addition, new university centers were created in order to promote inter-disciplinary research.

Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University

The Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) is a teaching and research institute affiliated with McGill University. MNI is a stimulating academic environment in which research, teaching and the highest quality clinical care come together to advance knowledge of the nervous system and improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with nervous system diseases. Over 80 faculty members contribute their research and clinical strengths to multi-disciplinary teams. MNI investigators are trained in such diverse fields as neurology, neurosurgery, cellular and molecular biochemistry, engineering, and psychology. Together with 135 students and fellows, they pursue multiple areas of inquiry including brain tumors, epilepsy, stroke, muscular dystrophy, neurodegenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis, and behavior and perception. The Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec (the National Institute for Public Health in Quebec - INSPQ) is a government organization founded in 1998 to improve the coordination, development and use of expertise in public health. The institute aims to be the center of expertise and reference on public health issues in Quebec. INSPQ manages the laboratories and centers in Québec which offer expertise in public health, namely: Québec Public Health Laboratory, Centre d'Expertise en Dépistage (Screening Expertise Centre), Centre de Toxicologie du Québec (Québec Toxicology Centre). Among its duties are the development and promotion of research in public health, together with research and funding organizations, as well as informing the population on its state of health and welfare, emerging problems, their determinants and effective means to prevent or solve these problems.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes

The Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) is one of the 13 virtual institutes which are part of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). INMD supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion and metabolism, and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney and liver function. The Strategic Plan of the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes identifies specific goals designed to address INMD's overriding objective of generating and translating new knowledge about obesity, such that the health of Canadians is improved and the health care system of Canada is strengthened.

The Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) supports research on the functioning and disorders of the brain, the spinal cord, the sensory and motor systems and the mind. INMHA promotes research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing and cognitive functioning, and to reduce the burden of related disorders, through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems and palliation. The institute works on improving the understanding of human thought and emotion, behaviour, sensation (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) perception, learning and memory. The institute has been designed to address all aspects of research dealing with Brain-Mind relationships, inclusive of the four pillars of the CIHR: biomedical, clinical, health services and population health research.

Agence de Développement de Réseaux Locaux de Services de Santé et de Services Sociaux – Québec Mauricie et Centre du Québec

The Agence de Développement de Réseaux Locaux de Services de Santé et de Services Sociaux de la Mauricie et du Centre-du-Québec (The Agency for the Developement of Local Networks for Health and Social Services in Mauricie and Center of Quebec) was established in January 2004. For the first two years, the Agence continues the mission of the Régie Régionale de la Santé et des Services Sociaux, besides the task to set up an organization for integrated health and social services. La Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon : Making a Difference Through Prevention

One of the most important foundations of Canada, the Fondation Lucie and Andre Chagnon, endowed with 1,4 milliard dollars, hopes to reduce by 15% the number of Quebec children living in poverty within 20 years. The organization’s primary goal is to change people’s attitudes and get them thinking about how things are done, with the aim of facilitating positive, sustainable changes in our society. Bringing about this kind of change involves addressing not only the many factors that determine health, such as behavior, lifestyle and diseases, but also social and economic factors, such as chronic poverty, economic dependence and school dropout rates, believe the founders. The Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon finances, at Université Laval, the research center in obesity prevention and the first chair in alternative medicine from Canada.
