The McGill Faculty of Medicine, established in 1823 as the Montreal Medical
Institution, was the first medical faculty founded in Canada. The modern era
has seen the emergence of hospital based research institutes as powerful
forces, making them equal partners with the basic science departments. New
institutions have taken up research and the Lady Davis Research Institute of
the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital over the past ten years has
emerged as an equal partner with the two adult institutions. The Research
Institute of the Douglas Hospital is recognized throughout the world for its
contributions to neuroscience and psychiatric research, and the Shriners
Hospital for Crippled Children contains one of the largest and most successful
units in the world devoted to research on crippling diseases. In addition, new
university centers were created in order to promote inter-disciplinary
research.

One of the most important foundations of Canada, the Fondation Lucie and Andre
Chagnon, endowed with 1,4 milliard dollars, hopes to reduce by 15% the number
of Quebec children living in poverty within 20 years. The organization’s
primary goal is to change people’s attitudes and get them thinking about how
things are done, with the aim of facilitating positive, sustainable changes in
our society. Bringing about this kind of change involves addressing not only
the many factors that determine health, such as behavior, lifestyle and
diseases, but also social and economic factors, such as chronic poverty,
economic dependence and school dropout rates, believe the founders. The
Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon finances, at Université Laval, the research
center in obesity prevention and the first chair in alternative medicine from
