Minors in Music

The various Undergraduate Minor programs currently offered by the Schulich School of Music are listed in the tabs below.  For minors requiring the completion of an application form, please consult the associated program and submit the completed form to the Department of Music Research by email (research [dot] music [at] mcgill [dot] ca) or in person to Desk A726C (7th floor, New Music Building, 514-398-4540) by the specified deadline.

Composition

The Minor in Composition offers a cross section of courses of the type taken by Composition majors, giving non-Composition majors the chance to explore a number of subjects specifically from a composer's vantage point. The required courses introduce students to important fundamental techniques in orchestration, instrumental composition, and digital composition; the complementary theory electives provide additional tools in analysis, and written expression of ideas related to composition.  Available to all students (with the exception of students in the B.Mus. Major in Composition) subject to the approval of the Schulich School of Music.  Minor has limited enrolment. Students are strongly recommended to submit a sample composition.

Music Education

This Music Education Minor offers students the ability to gain training in music pedagogy, whether for a studio, classroom, or rehearsal setting. The three possible streams (Studio Teaching, Elementary Music or Secondary Music) also provide an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue a second degree (B.Ed. or M. Ed.) for the purposes of Teacher Certification. (Note: By itself the minor provides no official certification.)

Available to all students (with the exception of students in the concurrent B.Mus./B.Ed. program) subject to the approval of the Schulich School of Music. Minor has limited enrolment.

The additional theory options available include courses focused on analysis, writing techniques, and current theoretical scholarship. The minor provides a means for music students to be recognized at graduation for their interest and focus on Music Theory and Analysis.
