A message from Patrick Hansen, Director of Opera McGill:

Hello,

Greetings from Montreal and Opera McGill.

I am the Director of Opera Studies and thought you might like to know some information about the coming Opera McGill season.

This year, the Opera McGill office assistants are:

Michaela Dickey, office manager (2nd year of her Artist Diploma in Voice)

Russell Wustenberg, office assistant (2nd year of his MMus in Opera and Voice)

*please do not write them regarding Opera McGill business at their personal email addresses

Please note, however, that the Opera McGill offices are not open during the summer and I am traveling and directing down in the states until mid-August. If you have any questions, just make sure you give plenty of time for a reply, as my ability to return email in a timely fashion is curtailed during June/July/August!

Opera McGill has an office on the 5th floor of the old music building, and an email address (operamcgill [at] gmail [dot] com). My office is on the 4th floor of the old music building (C402). All auditions, rehearsals and classes, unless specified otherwise, take place in the Wirth Opera Studio (located on the -2 floor of the new music building.)

INFO:

Opera McGill holds their auditions the first week of school. This year the PRELIMS are Tuesday, September 2nd; CALLBACKS are Wednesday, September 3rd (callbacks held in Pollack Hall).

For information, to sign-up, and for the online information sheet (which must be filled out prior to the PRELIMS), please consult the Opera McGill online blog at (but please note that this information will be up later this summer):

For those of you who want to know WHAT the audition requirements are:

Opera McGill Audition repertoire:

1) an aria from the baroque period

2) an aria by Mozart

3) an aria/song from the musical theatre rep, written before 1964. I am defining musical theatre as operetta (Lehar, Strauss, G&S, Offenbach, etc.), classic music theatre pieces (Rogers and Hart, Gershwin, R&H, Lerner & Loewe, Cole Porter, Kern, etc.), and/or pieces that defy definition into genre (like Porgy and Bess or works by Weil, Blitzstein, Bernstein, Sondheim, etc.)

4) ADDITIONAL REP requirement for MMus and ArtDip STUDENTS: an aria of your choice, not from the above categories

Opera McGill is an Ensemble that meets beyond the listed class times due to the nature of coaching, rehearsing, and staging an opera.

Depending on casting, men may be asked to grow facial hair and/or cut/grow their hair according to the needs of the production(s).

All first-time Opera McGill MMus students are required to take part in the "Opera McGill Experience". These are various experiences volunteering for rehearsal assistants (Assistant Stage Managers or Assistant Directors), backstage assistance (Calling projected supertitles, wardrobe assistants), or Opera McGill artistic administration assistance (Wirth Opera Studio crew, PR and social media assistants).
