The appropriate Area Chair is the advisor for students in non-thesis programs. Students in thesis programs are advised initially by the appropriate Area Chair. Subsequently, after due consultation with the student, the Area Chair will suggest a thesis supervisor. The thesis supervisor will then become the student's advisor.
See thesis supervision. See also Guidelines for Academic Units on Graduate Student Advising and Supervision, Section 3.1 of the 2013-2014 Graduate Programs, Courses and University Regulations Calendar.
