Mine Design and Numerical Modelling Laboratory

Mine Design

Established in 1988, McGill's Mine Design and Numerical Modelling Laboratory provides research and consulting with a wide variety of applications, including:

  • Geomechanical mine design: ore dilution, stability issues, sill pillar design, rockburst mechanics, destress blasting, risk assessment.
  • Numerical modelling: linear and nonlinear, 2D and 3D, viscoplastic behaviour.
  • Rock supports: performance, design, modelling, monitoring and laboratory testing.
  • Tailings dams: transient and long term geotechnical stability of tailings storage facilities – static liquefaction, drainage, compaction and high deposition rate problems.
  • Coal mining: roof support systems, coalbed methane drainage. Coal and gas outburst evaluation and prevention.
