McGill University offers two accredited co-op programs in mining and materials engineering. Co-op programs are structured to alternate the student’s program between work and study terms. As a result we have students available for hire year-round starting in January, May and September.

Mining and Materials Co-op Work Term Criteria
Duration of the Work Term
- 4 or 8 month paid Co-op internship in an industrial or research setting.
- Start dates should be in early January / May and September. (The specific start and end dates of a work term are flexible based on the company’s preference.)
- Minimum of 13 weeks duration for a 4 month stage and a minimum of 28 weeks duration for an 8 month stage.
Content of the Work Term
The student is required to do hands-on work in the materials or mining engineering field as an applied component of the theoretical knowledge gained in class. Students are required to complete these tasks under the supervision of an engineer or equivalent.
Typical Materials Co-op Job Tasks
Materials Testing, Materials Selection, Materials Characterization, Failure Analysis, Process Engineering, Mineral Processing, Extraction, Modeling, Design, Quality Control (Key areas include: Aerospace and Automotive, Biomaterials, Nanomaterials and Advanced Materials, Natural Resources, Process Engineering, Computational Materials Engineering).
Typical Mining Co-op Job Tasks
Surveying, Blasting, Haul Truck Operations, Ground Control, Ventilation, Consulting, Construction, Mine Design, Production Helpers, Environmental Management, Feasibility Studies.
Rate of Pay
The standard rate of pay for a university level co-op student is generally around $14-20 dollars per hour and students work a full-time schedule of 35-40 hours per week. Some companies or research centers increase the salary amount based on level of university year completed or number of Co-op stages completed. Other work perks companies might consider offering the student are the following: housing subsidy, travel subsidy, Co-op fee subsidy.
