Graduate Seminar 1, 2 (MIMM 611, MIMM 612)

Students present two seminar topics throughout the course of their degree program. The first seminar is not held publically but presented and evaluated in the context of the first MSc Advisory Committee meeting. The second seminar is public and held as part of the Graduate Student Seminar Series organized by the Department. 3 credits per course. 6 credits must be obtained in total.

M.Sc. students are required to attend 10 scientific seminars each term for 3 terms. 3 credits per course. 9 credits must be obtained in total. For more details, please refer to the Graduate Handbook.

Reading and Conference (MIMM 616, MIMM 617, MIMM 618, MIMM 619)
Six credits must be completed through 2 Reading and Conference courses. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers two Reading and Conference courses each year. These 6 credits may also be completed through any life sciences-related 500-600 level course held at McGill University. 3 credits per course. 6 credits must be obtained in total.

Master's Research 1, 2, 3 (MIMM 697, MIMM 698, MIMM 699)
Thesis research work under the direction of a supervisor. 8 credits per course. 24 credits must be obtained in total.

3 credits per course. 9 credits to be obtained in total.

MIMM 611
Candidates entering the PhD program with a MSc degree must present a research proposal seminar during their first term in residence and register for the course MIMM 611. This first seminar is not held publically but presented and evaluated in the context of the first PhD Advisory Committee meeting.
MIMM 612
Candidates who have entered the PhD program with a MSc degree must present a scientific seminar during their second year in residence and register for MIMM 612 for the term in which they will be presenting their seminar. This seminar is not held publically but presented and evaluated in the context of the second PhD Advisory Committee meeting.
MIMM 713
All candidates for the PhD degree (including candidates who entered the PhD program through a transfer from the MIMM MSc program) must present a scientific seminar during their final year of program. Students should register for MIMM 713 for the term in which they will be presenting their seminar. This seminar is a comprehensive summary of the results of the student's PhD research project. The seminar is public and held as part of the Graduate Student Seminar Series organized by the Department.

Ph.D. Research Progress Report 1, 2, 3 (MIMM 721, MIMM 722, and MIMM 723)
Course Coordinator: Prof. S. Fournier (sylvie.fournier [at] mcgill.ca)
Each Ph.D. student has an advisory committee (3 professors including research advisor) that meets yearly to consider student's progress. The Advisory Committee meetings consist of two parts. First, the student presents the progress of his/her research project when applicable and the future plans for the upcoming year to the Committee members. The presentation is followed by an informal discussion with Committee members. For each meeting, the student should prepare a brief outline, no longer than 8 double-spaced pages (including references and figures) describing the student's progress made during the year towards the research objectives.  1 credit per course. 3 credits must be obtained in total.

Comprehensive Examination (MIMM 701)

The comprehensive examination includes the submission of a written research proposal, an oral presentation of the research accomplishments to date and an oral testing on the understanding of the research area and of relevant scientific areas related to the student’s research project.
