|Douglas J James is a laser physicist with extensive experience in research and business.From 1965-1976 he was a lecturer in Applied Physics at the University of Hull, UKwhere he led an active research program in lasers and their application to plasma physicsand materials processing. In 1976 he joined Lumonics as a research scientist and until1994 contributed to its growth in a wide range of roles of increasing responsibility,including Chief Technology Officer and President. From 1988-1992 he was also Chair ofthe Board of the Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre, and served on that boarduntil 1997.He has been an independent consultant to a number of companies in N. America andEurope and was a founder and President of Jambalaya Technologies Inc. He was amember of the boards of AcXys Technologies, Grenoble, France,(2000-2011), theCanadian Institute of Photonics Innovation (2001-2012) where he served as Chair since2003, and, until September 2010, was Executive Chairman of PyroPhotonics Lasers Inc.He is currently Chair of the Canadian Photonic Industries Consortium (CPIC).Dr James holds the degrees of B.Sc. in Physics and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from theUniversity of Hull.|
The workshop will be divided into two distinct Sections.
The morning session will explore the key elements of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ventures, with extensive reference to real companies. Topics covered will include:-
- What makes an entrepreneur?
- Where/how do they get their business ideas?
- How do they validate them?
- Customers and markets
- Vision, Business models, business plans
- Co-founders and teams
- Advisors, Financing, and IP
- Growing a global enterprise
In the afternoon session, a number of active entrepreneurs will describe their ventures and how they became entrepreneurs.

Cost and Conditions
Cost of the Workshop: $150.00 CDN fee ($172.46 with tax). Free for ISS Students (access code required).
While priority will be given to ISS students who must take the workshop this year according to their plans, other spaces will be given first come first served.
Extra students may be added to the waitlist, and will be informed of an available space by email. To confirm their space, waitlisted students must follow the instructions provided.
