Fourth International Workshop on Extratropical Transition

The fourth in a series of international workshops on the Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones (IWET4) will be held from 20-25 May 2012 at the Mont Gabriel Lodge, Quebec, Canada. This meeting is sponsored by the WMO/WWRP through Tropical Meteorology Research and THORPEX.

The aims of the meeting are to review recent progress in predicting and understanding extratropical transition and to set future priorities for research and development in response to operational needs. The workshop will provide a forum for the research and forecasting communities to interact. In addition to presentations there will be time dedicated to discussion and practical sessions. Topics are requested on such areas as:

  • results from T-PARC
  • impact of ET on downstream predictability
    • direct impacts such as through extratropical cyclone development
    • indirect impacts such as through enhanced moisture transport
  • Application of remote sensing for ET analysis and forecasting
  • Application of ensemble prediction systems for ET analysis and forecasting
  • Verification of ET forecasts
  • Development of dedicated forecast products
  • High-impact weather at landfall
    • rainfall
    • storm surge, waves, and coastal erosion
