Consider the following food for thought...
15% of young women have substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors.
5% of adolescent and young adult women and 1% of men have eating disorders.
The death rate for eating disorders is high: it ranges between 18% (in 20-year studies) and 20% (in 30-year follow-up studies)
These statistics briefly shed light on the severity of a widespread struggle that has a particular stronghold on young, North American women. McGill EDP hopes to partially demystify eating disorders and the aura surrounding them by:
- Looking at the criteria for different types of eating disorders;
- Examining the consequences on physical and mental health;
- outlining some of the causes of eating disorders;
- and lastly by providing a list of resources for further information seeking.
