Information for parents

We are currently recruiting healthy children 2 through 5 years of age to participate a study on vitamin D status of young children from the Montreal Region. We welcome you to read through the information as well as the consent form which provides all of the details about the study.

Background information

Vitamin D is important for bone health at any age. However little is known as to whether Canadian children aged 2 to 5 years old get enough from their diet and/or supplements. To know the answer to this we measure vitamin D in tiny blood samples from a finger poke and also determine how much vitamin D they consume from food and supplements. This information will help us establish if young children have enough vitamin D or if we need to create solutions to improve the situation.

Why are we doing this study?

We want to find out the vitamin D levels of children aged 2 through 5 years old living in the Montreal area and what learn of the sources of vitamin D for these children.

Does your child fit the study criteria?

√ Healthy, 2 to 5 years of age
√ Attending day care in the Montreal area.

What is involved?

Most of the study will be done at your child's day care on one day.

At that visit we will:
Height of child • Weigh and measure your child’s height
• Measure their vitamin D level (done by poking their finger)
• Bone density test of your child’s arm (optional)

We will also need to call you, as the parent, one time to ask some questions about what your child eats and what activities they participate in. This phone call will take about 20 minutes.
