MYLIFE Study for 6-12 year old overweight and obese children

What is the study about?

The MYLIFE Study is a 1-year intervention study that teaches children about healthy eating and exercise practices to reduce obesity in children.

Who can participate in this study?

We are asking overweight and obese children 6-12 years old, with no serious medical conditions, to participate in this study. We are seeking approximately 150 children from the Montreal area.

Where does the study take place?

This study takes place at the Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit located in Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue on the West Island.

What is is involved if your child participates in this study?

STUDY VISITS (there are 5 visits, one visit every three months):

Visit #1, 3, 5 (Total time 2 hrs per visit)

1. Sign consent form;

2. Measure child’s weight, height and waist circumference;
3. Mothers will have the option to be weighed and measured as well;
4. Parents will complete a parent lifestyle questionnaire that includes demographic questions and a child lifestyle questionnaire that includes questions about child’s eating, activity, sleeping habits and sun exposure;
5. Your child’s blood pressure will be measured by a registered nurse;
6. Blood sample (optional) will be taken from your child’s arm by a registered nurse. Child must be fasted since midnight;
7. Balance and muscle strength of your child will be measured;
8. Your child’s skin colour will be measured with a special camera;
9. Your child’s arm and leg bone density will be measured using a PQCT and a DXA. This machine uses a very low dose of x-ray and does not hurt, it is like getting a picture taken;
10. Nutrition and activity education will be briefly provided to all family;
11. You will be given and explained how to complete the food and activity diaries.

Visits #2 and 4 (Total time 1 hr per visit)
1. Collect the food diary;
2. Measure child’s weight, height and waist circumference;
3. Parents will complete a child healthy questionnaire that surveys eating, activity, and sleep habits and child’s sun exposure;
4. Your child’s blood pressure will be measured by a registered nurse;
5. Blood sample (optional) will be taken from your child’s arm by a registered nurse. Child must be fasted since midnight;
6. Balance and muscle strength of your child will be measured;
7. Your child’s skin colour will be measured;
8. One bone density scan will be done.

TEACHING INTERVENTIONS WITH THE DIETITIAN (Total time 30-60 min per visit)
You will also have 5 family sessions with a dietitian.
