General Message from the Building Directors

This year will mark the completion of major improvements to the Macdonald Engineering Building. The accelerated pace of the renovations has demanded many accommodations from staff and students in Macdonald and adjoining buildings. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during the construction.

Work will continue for several more months and will be completed Summer 2011. You may have already noticed some of the accomplishments such as the construction of the new atrium, which now has the steel support structure in place. There will be some unavoidable inconveniences, but McGill is working closely with the contractors to minimize disruption.

By the end of February, the Workman Wing will be opened up on the first floor, allowing indoor access between McConnell and Macdonald. Please note this access will only be on the first floor for now.

From Monday January 10 until the end of February, intensive demolition work will be carried out on the 3rd and 4th floors adjacent to McConnell. Floor slabs will be cut to build new ramps to the McConnell floors and enable wheelchair accessibility to Macdonald. Stringent measures are in place to minimize renovation dust, but demolition will create some unavoidable noise and vibration. We will carry out the work as quickly as possible in order to minimize inconvenience to people working in neighbouring areas.

In late February, workers will excavate a trench in the Frank Dawson Adams courtyard to connect Macdonald to the city’s sewer system. This will affect circulation and deliveries that are ordinarily done through the courtyard. The new restrictions will begin late February or early March and will be in place for one month.

In February, there will be a major electrical shutdown because of the Macdonald Building renovations. We will provide further information as soon as the details are available. The Macdonald renovation will also require minor service shutdowns over the next few months, as well as the presence of construction machinery near the McConnell building. Finally, between February and the end of May (depending on the weather), work will be conducted on the roofing. Since asphalt will be used for the roof, you may notice the smell of tar while the work is being carried out.
