REMEMBRANCE DAY WAR MEMORIAL INSTALLATION CEREMONY

November 9, 2006

Monument commemorating Macdonald students who died in the World Wars.

On November 11, 1931, students at Macdonald College dedicated 44 oak trees – on what is now the John Abbott College athletic field – to the memory of those who served and died in World War I.Seventy-five years later, many of the oak trees still stand. The Macdonald Campus of McGill University and John Abbott College added to them a new, permanent commemorative monument unveiled November 9.

Of the 357 Macdonald students and staff who fought in WWI, 34 lost their lives. The oak trees and the permanent monument are a tribute to them and to all who served in defense of our country, said Lou Chapman, a member of the commemoration organizing committee who has done his part to keep alive the memory of Macdonald’s fallen soldiers.

On hand to help unveil the new monument were veterans from the Sainte-Anne’s Hospital, and more than 1500 students, faculty and staff from John Abbott College, the Macdonald Campus of McGill University, and Macdonald High School, which was a part of Macdonald College until 1947, as well as local dignitaries.

CENTENARY FOUNDER'S DAY CELEBRATIONS

A celebration of our history, our strengths and our promise for the future

Each year, Macdonald staff, students, alumni and friends celebrate the birth of our Founder, Sir William Christopher Macdonald. This year’s celebration was a day-long event, commencing in the morning with the traditional Founder’s Day Lecture, Awarding of Gold Keys for student excellence and the first Macdonald Centenary Award of Excellence for Administrative and Support Staff.

This was followed by an afternoon of activities as a lead-in to an evening Gala which was held in the Centennial Centre.

FOUNDER'S DAY LECTURE

This event is available on webcast.

Gold Key Award recipients: Hamilton Bennett, Maryse Bourgault, Lise Cobitz, Marie-Anne Hardy, Andrée-Michelle D'Aoust-Messier and Nick Patoka.

Peter Knox, Property Maintenace Supervisor for Facilities Management at Macdonald, was the first recipient of the Macdonald Campus Award of Excellence for Administrative and Support Staff, given in recognition of his outstanding performance and contributions to the Macdonald Campus and community as demonstrated both in the execution of duties and in the effort and commitment towards service. Peter Knox has been part of Macdonald since 1968, first as a student then as a staff member. He has always gives more than 100% to his job, and is truly at the heart of the Macdonald community.

A CELEBRATION OF THE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT

Spring, 2007

Green and Gold are the official Macdonald Campus colours. In the fall of 2006, as part of Macdonald Centenary celebrations, students in the “Landscape Design” course (FMTP 097) planted shrubs and bulbs to show off the “green-and-gold”. On October 20, the students planted hundreds of flower bulbs: daffodils, crocus and tulips. In the spring, these yellow-flowered beauties will embellish the front of Laird Hall - the student residence – and the walkway east of the Centennial Centre, the student society building. Then on November 10, the same class planted trees and shrubs in three clusters in a location north-east of the Macdonald library. They planted cedars, mock-orange, dogwood and other flowering shrubs, both native and exotic. All of these trees and shrubs have either green or golden foliage or yellow flowers in the spring or fall.
