Visiting Graduate Students

Procedure for applying to be a visiting graduate student in the department

The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of graduate students who wish to stay in the Department as visiting graduate students. Visiting graduate students are registered in a graduate degree program at another university, and their research interests must connect well to those of the Department.

For different categories for visiting the Department as a graduate student, please see this page: http://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/apply/prepare/visiting Please note that the Department does not offer Special Student admission at the graduate level.

Given limited resources, including limited availability of space and administrative support, the Department is only able to accommodate a small number of visiting students each year. Visiting students are offered shared office space if possible, as well as access to the McGill library and email. Unfortunately, the Department is unable to provide visiting students with financial support.

How to apply:

Before submitting an application, prospective visiting graduate students should have contacted a faculty member in the Department who has agreed to serve as a supervisor. Depending on which category of visiting graduate student you are applying to be, your applications may be required to include all or some of the following documents: (i) university transcripts (official or unofficial); (ii) two letters of recommendation; (iii) a statement of purpose describing your research interests, their relation to the interests of the Department, the research goals of your visit, and the beginning and ending dates of the visit; (iv) writing sample; (v) proof of proficiency in English (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) if applicable. Any documents in languages other than English or French must be accompanied by an English translation. Applications should be submitted (preferably by email in electronic format) to:
