The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of researchers who wish to stay in the Department as visiting researchers. A visiting researcher holds a PhD degree, normally holds a permanent position elsewhere, and normally stays in the Department for a maximum of one year. Given limited resources, including limited availability of space and administrative support, the Department is only able to accommodate a small number of visiting researchers each year. Visiting researchers are offered a desk in a shared office as well as access to the McGill library and email. Unfortunately, the Department is unable to provide visiting researchers with financial support.
How to apply:
Before submitting an application, prospective visiting researchers should have contacted a faculty member in the Department who has agreed to serve as a sponsor. Applications should include (i) a statement of purpose indicating the beginning and ending dates of the visit, the research goals for the visit, as well as the relation of the proposed research to the research of the sponsoring faculty member; (ii) a Curriculum Vitae; and (iii) a writing sample written in English (normally a recent published paper). The Department may also request letters of recommendation. Applications should be submitted (preferably by email in electronic format) to:
Luis Alonso-Ovalle ,Chair
Department of Linguistics
1085 Dr. Penfield
Montreal, Quebec H3A 1A7
Email: luis.alonso-ovalle [at] mcgill.ca
Prospective visiting researchers whose application has been accepted will be contacted with further details regarding their visit.
Applications should be submitted at least 4 to 6 months before the intended start date of the visit. In particular, visiting researcher applications are due on March 1 for visits beginning the following Fall term (which starts in September) and September 1 for visits beginning the following Winter term (which starts in January). Acceptance decisions are communicated to applicants shortly after these deadlines.
