Imaging rules of use

  1. Before being issued online booking access and using the Imaging Facility ALL USERS MUSTmeet the following requirements:
    • Be trained by one of the local confocal managers, the facility director, or a representative from the microscope company. Users will not be permitted to train other new users.
    • All users MUST fill out a project proposal form.
    • Users MUST be part of a laboratory or group that is registered with the facility and has provided account information for billing of fees.
  2. Initial training sessions will be scheduled for 3 hours and the user is required to bring a sample similar to one they will be using for their project to work with during the training session. This makes the training more specific to a given application and helps address specific sample issues.
  3. Each confocal session will be limited to a maximum of one 3 hour session per day with a limit of 3 sessions (total of 9 hours) per week.
If there is a need for longer/more access to the equipment either for a single use or on a more permanent basis please contact one of the local confocal managers or the facility director.
  4. Users are to sign in the black log book with the time they start using the equipment and the time they finish. Users will be charged for time used with a minimum charge of one hour for each booking. If users consistently overbook time they will be charged for time booked, not time used. If users do not show up for time they have booked and they do not cancel a booking within 2 hours of the start time they will be charged for the entire booking.
  5. If users do not show up during the first hour of their booking the instrument is considered available for others to use. As per statement 4, you will be billed for the time booked.
  6. Users will NOT be charged if the equipment is not functioning. Please inform local managers or the facility director immediately if there is a problem with the equipment.
  7. Users can only work on instruments they have been trained on.
  8. ONLY users with prior approval will be permitted to use the instruments after hours.
  9. Priority will be given in the following order:
    • Local Users
    • Live cell experiments
    • McGill Users
    • Outside Users
  10. The facility assumes no responsibility for data stored on the instrument computers. Please use ONLY new CD-R or DVD-R disks to burn your images as soon as possible. Images left on the computers for more than one month can be deleted without notice. NO CD-RW, DVD-RW or USB keys are allowed as they can carry viruses infecting the computers.
  11. When technical assistance is required it will be by appointment only.
  12. Samples at or above biohazard Level 2 will not be allowed in the facility
  13. Fixed cells on LSM3
    • Bookings for fixed cell imaging is only permitted after hours: i.e. before 8AM and after 6PM Monday to Friday or Saturday or Sunday.
    • Fixed cells can be imaged during prime time (8AM-6PM) ONLY if on the day of your experiment there is time free on the microscope. There will be NO advanced booking for fixed cells.

Please remember to acknowledge the McGill Life Sciences Complex Imaging Facility and the CFI in any publications you have that include images taken in the facility.

These rules are subject to change if deemed necessary by the Imaging Facility staff or Users Committee.
