Special collections
Edward Rosenthall Mathematics and Statistics Library
There are three bookcases in the library that contain rare books in mathematics. These books were identified in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library by Professor N. Kamran and brought to Rosenthall Library. Some had to be rebound before being added to the collection. Others are considered too fragile to be copied. The collection is under lock and key. Some important titles include:
- Laplace, Oeuvres, v. 1-13
- Fermat, Oeuvres, v. 1-4 and supplement
- Oeuvres de Henri Poincaré, 2 v., 1916
Mossman Collection on the History of Science and of Ideas
The Mossman Collection on the History of Science and of Ideas is the gift of Drs. Donald and Dorothea Mossman. Avid readers, the Mossmans collected a large personal library with emphasis on the history of science and of ideas. This collection was donated to McGill University in 1974, and it became available to scholars with the opening of the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library in 1982. The Mossman Collection includes the Landmarks of Science, a microcard/microfiche set of famous scientists' works.
For many years, the Mossmans regularly contributed generous funds towards the development of the Mossman Collection. In 1982, an additional gift established an endowment not only to purchase library materials but also to inaugurate a lecture series on the History of Science and of Ideas given by recognized scholars.
